On the Strength of Reeds: Washington Irving's Christopher Columbus
by Maureen Holm (from Oct '01)
The conventional praise for Columbus . . . mutes his vow to commit his anticipated fortune to the recovery of the holy sepulcher from the 'infidels' in Jerusalem. In short, Columbus was a religious zealot—and one notable for his fervor even as King Ferdinand directed the Spanish Inquisition from Cordoba.

The Fulcrum: Tim Scannell on PDA's (Public Displays of Autobiography)
Yes, I know that each life has its Rosebud thrown into the fire at the end. Yet that sociological guesstimate and judgment is so genuinely inane, so flip, that I ignore any and all such societal pronouncements altogether.

Stephanie Dickinson's novel, Half Girl, pulls you under at once, and when you come up for air, you are astounded to be in the same room where you began. Each sentence is a surprise—a trip in the mind of a sharply sensual and adventurous girl who is leaving home and immediately finding danger in cold, lonely places. You read in fear of what might happen to her, but also with a blind faith in her hopeful determination.—Meredith Sue Willis
